Forest Capital of Canada 1998

The Swan River Valley was awarded The Forest Capital of Canada award for 1998 in recognition of the community's commitment to, and dependence on, the forest and their celebration of the importance of the forests to the community.

History of the Award

The Forest Capital of Canada award was established in 1979. The Award recognizes a community in Canada that is noteworthy because of its commitment to and dependence on the forest resource and the community's civic-minded recognition of this interdependence. The Award is made annually by the Canadian Forestry Association.

Originally the Award was made to recognize the people of the winning community for their outstanding efforts in the promotion of the importance of the forest to their community and to all of Canada during National Forest Week. In following years, the Award was extended and applicant communities are now judged on their commitment to, and dependence on, the forest and their celebration of the importance of the forests to the community. Forest Capital recognition normally received high focus during National Forest Week, but to an increasing degree the communities are expanding activities to include special events throughout the year, as well as permanent legacies.

This is the first time a community in Manitoba has been recognized with this award.
